When The Doors Close

I'm doing some thinking on the whole consolidation thing. From an athletic standpoint it has both positive and negative. The positive is that the better athletes from several schools join forces. That could be really good. The negative is that the proximity to the facilities changes. I teach in a county where there is one high school. To give you an example of the distance involved to get to and from a practice, imagine driving from BSG to Coeburn. There are schools in Mecklenburg and Halifax Counties that are closer, but we have already experienced and dealt with the issues of non-residents being students. We have to run an activity bus in the Fall to get kids to FB practice. Plus, you will always have the element of change. People just don't take to it. Richmond City Schools, a long time ago, had complexes. They combined schools without building new facilities. Don't know why, but they were dominant in AAA basketball in the early '80s. I just wonder, and I am wondering, if it is cheaper to build two new schools rather than refurbish all the old ones. I know that Randolph-Henry was built in 1935 and they can only do some much more to the actual physical structure. The buildings we are talking about just weren't built for the numbers of kids and the types of technological advances we must have in our schools.

it is going to happen weahter we like it or not. doesn't matter who tried it before and failed. It will be tried again and one day it will happen. I would say in the next 10 years

It's going to happen in DC too. Why does it matter who does it? What is so complex about closing a school and consolodating with another. I guess you have to call in counselors and support staff. Time to wake up. Don't matter if a Democrat or Republican proposes it. If it is sound fisically, then bite the bullet and get it done. I still haven't gotten how Basham proposed such a bad plan? That is what he was paid to do.

Basham only proposed what an outside consulting firm what they determined was best for the system.

And I have seen the consolodation battles first hand. When my Dad was on the board of supervisors, he was asked if it ever was proposed, would he vote to shut down Ervinton High School. He said with some classes just having 7 students, it would be common sense to shut it down. The next meeting, the people down there tried to crucify him.

To no one in particular but those who want to see W.C. do it because of sports. And don't say you don't. Cause i know the facts behind it.

And yet the one system locally, who was to already be deep into consolidation has not, done squat besides look at some ground and move some dirt. Yet no consolidation. If i was a tax payer in DC i'd be asking why not and where has the grant money went. But you never hear that mentioned.
Dickenson County.
The only system that voted for consolidation, yet lost it's funding. Now has consolidation passed, yet the tax payers are still paying for the same, run down schools, that are 10 times worse than any schools in WC.
Sorry guys but it's the truth and big thing you all know it.

What will eventually happen in WC, 3 new county school with possibly Norton included. The big hold up. Is awaiting Norton outwardly saying, they can no longer afford to operate their systems.
Sorry to a lot but that is the future and that is the major hold up as for now. It will happen.
But at least we know why. It will not be, because it was as in DC, a political move to regain political seats, then not do squat but let the taxpayers pay for nothing.

Yeah if i lived in DC i'd be asking some questions. I know the future of WC. How many in DC know or have any clue of where when or how. Seems like not very many.

Im sure my buddy Burr and Rocketer will have something to say on this. But you know i do know a little and i do get around.

As far as Wise Co. as i said. It's a matter to see if the City of Norton can afford Burton. If not or if they can, consolidation of WC schools, will be looked at based on 3 schools no matter what.
New and totally state of the art. One reason for our new superintendent. One he knows how to do it correctly and two he knows how to obtain the funding, without totally bankrupting the county, as Mr. Basham would of done.

Maybe we will have ours before DC ever breaks ground, how ironic huh. It's only been what about 6-7 yrs since they voted to consolidat and lost how much funding?
Considering they should of done been well into consolidation with a new school. But oh well.

Oh and as far as Bashman it wasn't if he was right or wrong. It was his haste to do it and not do it correctly. And also all the lies and backdoor things between him and some who were on the board.

Hope that clarifies a few things. And i've said enough so have fun trying to find fault with what i said.

You are missing the point. If we don't get say, you won't consolidate anything.
